1. The Legal Requirement (in plain English)

Every maintained school, academy, free school, and sixth form in England must have:

A Climate Action Plan (CAP) aligned to DfE guidance

A nominated sustainability lead

CAP signed off by governors

Deadline: September 2025

From the March 2025 guidance - Your CAP must show:

1 A clear carbon baseline using energy and travel data

2 Planned actions across buildings, business operations, and education

3 Links to your wider estates and development plan

4 An assigned lead with governance oversight

5 A schedule for review and updates
